Ellesmere Awarded School Games Mark Gold

Ellesmere College achieved the Gold School Games Mark award for their commitment, engagement and delivery of competitive school sport.

The School Games Mark is a government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.

Schools are assessed against a number of criteria across the areas of participation; competition, leadership and links with sports clubs or establishments from the area.

A gold standard recognises at least 50% of pupils in extracurricular sporting activity every week and an environment, which offers talented young sports people specific support to help them to balance their sporting commitments with school and home life.

Director of sport Ian Williams said: "We are absolutely thrilled with this major achievement. Sport is an important part of a rounded education. Children learn communication and teamwork skills and these are transferred into the classroom."

"We see this when they are working in groups. They are learning to co-operate with each other and accept and respect other pupils' ideas".

In the future, the school plans to submit an application for the Platinum award, which assesses the planning and delivery of competition as well as how the school supports exit routes for young people into community activities. The successful introduction of a new football academy this year compliments the school's sports provision and demonstrates the commitment to achieving platinum status.
