Wed 20th Sep Won 3-1 (Sarah Haynes, Beth Clewloe, Abi Merrill)
On Wednesday, the 1sts Hockey travelled to Lilleshall to face Stafford Grammar School. Full of confidence from Saturday's fine performance, the whole squad knew it was going to be a totally different game - especially as it was their first game on astro.
The first job proved a difficult one for the 1sts coaches, Mr Mullock and Miss Goss, this was to choose a starting 11 and after Saturdays' performance, it was decided that the team would remain the same.
The first 10 minutes saw the two sides equal in standard with the play happening mostly in Midfield. Ellesmere tried to move the ball around but was not always successful due to the faster conditions of the pitch. Half way through the 1st half from a side line pass saw them score their 1st goal. The goal was made from basic side line pass to Top D and Sarah Haynes, perfectly positioned, to sweep in the ball from left post, making her goal tally to 5 in 2 games!
The second half saw the introduction to Beth Clewloe to the pitch who within the first five minutes made herself known after she performed a great strike from the top of the D to make it 2-0. Emma Johnson worked hard in midfield and fed the forwards with same great balls in the D but they were unable to find the back of the net.
Ellesmere struggled slightly on the water based turf and were often slow in getting back to defend when they lost the ball in attack. In the last 5 minutes of the game, Stafford looked dangerous on the attack and from a quickly taken free hit finally got their first goal. However, the game didn't finish there and within 1 minute of Stafford scoring a goal, Ellesmere were awarded a penalty corner in which Abi scored from, making a final score of 3 - 1 to the college.
A good win for the girls! Special mentions should go out to Grace Kendall, who received players' player of the day for her work in defence and to Emma Johnson, who received overall player of the match!
