Ellesmere College Play host to Twenty/20 Cricket Tournament 2006
On Sunday 14th May, Ellesmere College played host to three other schools as part of the National Twenty/20 Cricket Tournament.
Ellesmere College were drawn in the first round of this competition with local rivals, Oswestry School and Wrekin College as well as Merchant Taylors' School from Crosby. As part of the competition, each team plays one match against every other team with one game being played during the week and the other two at the host school, Ellesmere on the Sunday. Ellesmere travelled to Wrekin College on the preceding Thursday.
During the morning, Ellesmere gained a convincing victory over local rivals Oswestry School. Oswestry, after being put into bat, lost 2 quick wickets and never really recovered and only managed to score 81 in their 20 overs. Alex Whittle was dismissed in the first over, but Nick James (45 not out) and Patrick Cudmore at first steadied the innings and then accelerated to add 57 for the 2nd wicket. Nick James remained at the wicket to guide Ellesmere home with almost 8 overs to spare.
Oswestry 81 - 7 (Daborn 2-9)
Ellesmere 83 - 2 (12.1 overs) (James N 45*)
WON by 8 wkts
Afternoon match:
Both Ellesmere & Merchant Taylors' had lost to Wrekin so the winners of this match still had a chance to qualify for the next round on run rate. The Merchant Taylors' opening batsmen Dawber chanced his arm and despite playing a number of shots which were almost caught rode his luck to score a century. In reply Nick James the Ellesmere captain was dismissed in the 1st over and although Patrick Cudmore scored 76 not out and added 82 with George Forgrave (18) in 13 overs Ellesmere were not quite able to score at the required rate.
Merchant Taylors' Crosby 159 - 3
Ellesmere 128 - 5 (Cudmore 76*)
Lost by 31 runs
Overall Wrekin by winning all three of their matches qualified for the next round.
