The 1st Girls' Tennis Team recently reached the UK National Finals of the British Schools Tennis competition.
Over three days in April, the group of four sixth form pupils at Ellesmere College who make up the School's 2005/6 1st Girls Tennis Team traveled to Bolton with their coaches to participate in this year's Team Tennis Senior Students National Finals.
The Ellesmere team was one of eight teams from around the country participating in the final. 300 teams from across the country had initially entered the competition, with the initial games being played on a regional basis. The team was made up of Buffy Swinerton, Captain, Steph Perrin, Valerie Zelgar and Stephanie Oeking. To qualify for the finals, the girls had won the Shropshire, North Wales and Cheshire leagues to go forward to the knock-out stage in February and then reaching the final at Bolton.
Barbara Goolden, the senior Tennis Coach at Ellesmere College commented, 'This year's team are very enthusiastic and play well together in single matches and in pairs. Their self-motivation coupled with the weekly quality coaching sessions at the School from Simon Bird, the LTA Shropshire County Coach, has ensured that the team is at the peak of their performance when competing.'
