Ellesmere College Scored well in Preparatory School Rifle Association Centenary Championships

Pupils from Ellesmere recently participated in a national schools' shooting competition and had the opportunity to meet the Earl of Wessex.

The largest team ever from Ellesmere College Lower School Shooting Development Squad traveled to Bisley, Surrey over the weekend of 4th and 5th March to participate in the Preparatory School Rifle Association Centenary Championships.

The Ellesmere College Team A was made up of George Baxter, Henry Cureton, Jake Taylor and Martin Steggles. They shoot particularly well and achieved second place in the Team Championship, only four points behind the winners, Terra Nova School.

In the individual match, George Baxter achieved third place in the Open Match and second place in the Preparatory School Rifle Association Centenary Confined Championship and Jake Taylor was also placed in the top ten scorers.

In the afternoon, an international match was held in the presence of HRH the Earl of Wessex and Ellesmere College had the highest number of individuals selected. George Baxter was selected to shoot for the England team, who won overall, with Jake Taylor, Henry Cureton and George Cooper all being selected to represent Wales, who came second.

The teams were accompanied by their coaches, Philip Hillier, Ellesmere College's Senior Shooting Coach, Mrs. Claire Clewlow and Mr. James Quinlan, Junior Shooting Coach. Mr. Quinlan commented, 'All four of the Ellesmere College teams played well. However, special mention must be made of Jake Taylor's score of 178 which was the second highest score of the Championships. We are also fortunate too to have the support of the international competitor, Mrs. O.J. Lamont who also coaches the pupils whenever we visit Bisley.'
