Gap Students
Three young people from across the world have recently arrived in Shropshire to spend their GAP year at Ellesmere College.
As part of a well established programme of visits by students from Australia and New Zealand, Ellesmere College has recently welcomed Laura Morton, Caitriona Cotter and Sam McKelvey.
Laura Morton is from Merimbula, Australia. She commented I decided on a gap year in order to meet new people, travel and experience a different culture. I enjoy tennis and running, both of which I can continue to pursue whilst at Ellesmere. Despite being away from her beautiful beach town, she is thoroughly enjoying the experience and the company Ellesmere College provides as well as the travel opportunities around the country and Europe that are now possible. When she returns to Australia in December, Laura will be studying nursing at University in Wollongong.
Caitriona Cotter comes to Ellesmere College from her home town in Sydney, Australia with the intention of traveling across Europe and gaining a greater cultural experience. She commented with my experience and enjoyment of netball, swimming, sailing and football I have already had every opportunity to assist in these areas of the College. At the end of the calendar year, Caitriona will return to Australia to a cadetship with Ernst and Young, whilst studying for a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
Sam McKelvey, is from Pukekohe, a small town on the outskirts of Auckland, New Zealand. His interests include rugby, rowing, cricket, hockey and most sports. He commented I decided to take a GAP year to experience an English school but not as a pupil. I am enjoying the opportunities presented immensely with the brilliant staff and extended community as well as the travel that I have already completed. Sam will return to New Zealand in December when he will complete a double degree in commerce and law at University.
Tim Bongers, French Teacher and Lower School Tutor, who also has the responsibility of supporting the Gap Students whilst at Ellesmere College commented, In Sam, Laura and Caitriona, we have been blessed with another trio of excellent gappies, popular with pupils and staff alike. They will each certainly make a huge contribution to College Life this year.
