Duke of Edinburgh Awards
Thirty-one of our pupils were awarded their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards by The Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, Mr. Heber-Percy on Thursday 3rd February at 2.30pm.
The pupils, currently working towards their Gold awards, welcomed Mr. Heber Percy to the school and accompanyed him to the Lower School Hall where he made the presentataionof the Awards. Each of the four sections of the award has been completed with much enthusiasm by the group of thirty-one pupils. The Services' element of the Awards has ranged from conservation projects, to visits to older people via the local Age Concern group and the re-decoration of House premises at the school. Each pupil has been able to design their own programme of activities. A huge range of skills were undertaken, from Photography to Clay Pigeon shooting and expedition preparation. A number of teachers act as Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme Leaders and this year they have been particularly impressed with the behaviour of their candidates, especially how they have been "immaculate' on their expeditions.
Ros McCarthy the teacher in charge of the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme at the College commented "The importance of learning to work within a team can never be over-emphasised and this year's candidates whilst working towards their awards have gained work-experience and summer employment. The self reliance which the Award encourages is also a great confidence-booster. This is a very important award presentation and we are delighted that the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire has been able to visit Ellesmere College to present the awards. My congratulations to all concerned!'
