Chess Successes

Five Ellesmere College pupils recently took part in the regional finals of the UK Chess Challenge. This annual competition has had this year a record entry with nearly 70,000 children taking part. The regional final for players from Shropshire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire has recently taken place at University College Worcester when players from all three counties battled it out to see who would qualify for the national finals which take place at Keele University in July. In the junior age sections William Bartlett (from Wem) Charles Manford (from Oswestry) and Jade Brodie (from Nantwich) all played incredibly well. Jade and William both succeeded in winning through to the National Finals at U12 level with Jade gaining the best in age “suprema” title. Charles narrowly missed out being one point short of the qualifying score. In the senior competition Scott Cooper (from Llangollen) also missed out by one point but Siân Corish (from Ellesmere) qualified as best in age “suprema” in the U16 girls.
