b'Wartime Stories: Rob The ParadogOur Yr 6 pupils took a step back in time when they visited Ellesmere Library to hear all about a local war heroRob the Paradog!Rob the Paradog was born and bought up on a farm near Ellesmere and served in WW2saving the lives of soldiers and civilians and undertaking countless parashoot jump with the SAS regiment. Rob was also one of the few animals who served in the war to receive a Dickin Medalthe animal equivalent to the Victoria Cross - and had a book written about him by local author Dorothy Nicolle. Robs owner, Basil Bayne, chatted to the children about life during the war, how brave Rob was and the part he played in helping the war effort. The students loved hearing about Robs storyDan said, Its interesting how it is not just humans that can save lives. Eva commented,I love the idea of a dog parachuting out of the plane, and Nat agreed, saying, It was very interesting learning about the different animals that won the Dickin Medal.Philosophy: Is it all in the mind?A group of Sixth Formers took part in a 10 week course offered by the Royal Institute of Philosophy as part of the Philosophy in Schools Project.We invited guest lecturer Harry Drummond, from Liverpool University, who took the students through an engaging series of topics over the 10 week course designed to test and challenge their intuition about ethics, aesthetics, knowledge, and the mind!They covered some fascinating topics including: Idealism vs Realism, Existentialism, The Mind-Body Problem, Ethics and Phenomenologywhich all the students enjoyed discussing and debating with each other.We look forward to welcoming Harry back again next Spring!EllesmereCollellesmerecollellesmere_college4'
